HMS Simoom was a Royal Naval destroyer, part of the Harwich Force that put to sea on 22nd January, 1917, to intercept a German force of eleven destroyers known to be heading to Zeebrugge. The two opposing flotillas met near the North Hinder Light ship, some 50 miles off the Belgian coast, in the early hours of the following  day, 23rd January. In the ensuing fight, one of the German destroyers, the S 50, became separated from the rest of the German ships and at 4am ran into a line of British ships headed by HMS Simoom. The S 50 launched a torpedo which hit HMS Simoom and caused her magazine to explode, resulting in many casualties among her crew. The survivors were taken off by another destroyer and then HMS Simoom was torpedoed and sunk. Among the casualties was Stanley Revell.
